MEDICARE ADVANTAGE GAVE ME MORE FOR MY RETIREMENT DOLLAR
I care a lot about my health, but I live on a fixed income. My HMO Medicare Advantage plan provides medical, prescription, dental, and vision coverage at an affordable price. I also have a gym membership.
Medicare Advantage Plans
Enrolling in Original Medicare only leaves you exposed to unlimited out-of-pocket expenses. To protect yourself, we recommend that you purchase a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplemental plan.
Overview. What is it?
Medicare Advantage (MA) plans combine the benefits of Medicare Parts A & B into one plan, called Part C. You must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B in order to purchase a Medicare Advantage plan. Some Medicare Advantage plans include coverage for prescription drugs. Those are called a MA-PD plan. You will receive all of the same benefits of Medicare Part A & B, in addition to other extra benefits. Medicare Advantage plans are often managed care plans offered by health insurance companies. When you need care, it must be obtained through the health insurance company's network of doctors and hospitals. It's important that you understand what type of plan you are purchasing, so you know how to access care. Options are typically a HMO, PPO, or PFFS plan. Availability of plans vary widely by zip code or service area.
Benefits? Oh, there are so many!
Out-of-pocket expenses are a lot less than having Original Medicare alone. The monthly premiums on a Medicare Advantage plan are typically less than a Medicare Supplement plan, but they do vary by plan and company. Plans frequently include extra benefits such as gym memberships, transportation services to doctor appointments, dental, hearing, or vision coverage. There are no underwriting guidelines to overcome, but you can only enroll in certain times.
When Can I Enroll?
Just ask us! General speaking, there is an annual Open Enrollment period from October 15th - December 7th. Most folks can enroll, change, or drop their Medicare Advantage plan at that time. However, there are many situations when you could be eligible to enroll or change your plan outside of that period. Want some examples? If you lose your employer coverage, just enrolled in Medicare Part B, turned 65 years old (Happy Birthday!), moved, loss Extra Help, are insured by Medicare and Medical, and more.
